Ryman Business and the Environment

Ryman Business feels strongly about caring for the environment
We have worked with Carbon Trust in order to assess our carbon footprint and we are fully committed to reducing emissions wherever possible. We know this commitment is important to our customers.

Here are some of the initiatives that are helping us improve our sustainability.

We use high specification carrier bags that are reusable and recyclable at their end of life.

We are a participating retailer of the Close The Door retail initiative, which works to stop shops wasting energy by keeping their doors open when using heating or air-conditioning.

We offer pen recycling in all of our stores. We've collected over 100,000 pens which we convert into charity donations.

Ink and toner cartridge recycling is available in all stores and we provide customers with a 50p discount for each cartridge returned (discount is only available when making a subsequent purchase of ink / toner in store on the day of making the return and is for a maximum of 5 cartridges per transaction).

Under the Waste Battery Regulations, we offer a take-back scheme for all portable waste batteries. Recycling boxes can be found in all of our stores, alternatively, you can find your local waste portable battery recycling facility at www.recyclenow.co.uk. Most supermarkets and shops that sell batteries will have collection bins for used batteries, and some town halls, libraries or schools may also set up collection points.

We require that all our suppliers comply with the code of ethical trading (The Ethical Trading Initiative Base Code) and continue to monitor these standards on a regular basis - this includes business practice, manufacturing standards, factory conditions, and sustainable sourcing policies for timber and paper.

We work with carbon neutral suppliers for our marketing and packaging materials. Both cardboard and plastic waste from our warehouse packaging and logistics operations are compressed and recycled.

We are continuously upgrading the lighting in our offices, warehouses and stores to LED.

WEE Requirements (The Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment)

In the UK, distributors including retailers must provide a system which allows all customers buying new electrical equipment the opportunity to recycle their old items free of charge. As a responsible retailer and member of the Distributor Take-back Scheme (DTS), we have met the requirements placed on us by financially supporting the national network of WEEE recycling centres established by local authorities.

Why recycle WEEE

Unwanted electrical equipment is the UK’s fastest growing type of waste. Many electrical items can be repaired or recycled, saving natural resources and the environment. If you do not recycle electrical equipment, it will end up in landfill where hazardous substances leak out and cause soil and water contamination, harming wildlife and also human health. To remind you that electrical equipment can be recycled, it is now marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. Please do not throw any electrical equipment (including those marked with this symbol) in your bin.
